What Is a Reefer Container?

Industrial-Grade Temperature Control in a Steel Container

A refrigerated container, a "reefer" in industry terms, is a standard shipping container with a refrigeration unit integrated into one end wall. It runs continuously or on a set schedule, circulating conditioned air through a raised aluminum T-floor so air can move beneath the stored goods.

Reefers were designed to carry perishable food by sea at a controlled temperature.

Reefers need a 460V 3-phase power connection. If your property does not have 3-phase, a diesel or natural gas generator can run the unit instead. Ask about power options when you request the quote.

Missouri Applications

Ways to Use a Reefer in Missouri

Produce, melon and orchard operations across the Bootheel and the river bottoms that need cold storage at the farm rather than a round trip to town.

Meat, poultry and food processing operations in St. Joseph, the Sedalia and Marshall corridor and southwest Missouri, adding cold capacity at the plant without rebuilding.

Caterers, festival crews and event operators in Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia and Branson who need cold storage delivered to a site that has none.

Restaurants, grocers and breweries in Kansas City, St. Louis and Springfield adding walk in capacity in the lot rather than rebuilding the back of house.

Vineyards and wineries through the Missouri Rhineland between Augusta, Washington and Hermann, holding fruit and finished stock through a harvest that does not wait.

Power Requirements

Running a Reefer Container in Missouri

Standard Power Connection

Reefer containers plug into a 460V 3-phase, 60Hz supply, the standard for commercial and industrial electrical systems. Commercial, agricultural and industrial properties may already have 3-phase power; confirm what is available at your site.

A qualified electrician can install an outlet at the reefer location. The refrigeration unit draws roughly 7 to 12 kW depending on the set temperature and the ambient conditions.

Generator Option

If the property has no 3-phase supply (for example a rural site, an off-grid location or a temporary event site), a diesel or natural gas generator rated for 3-phase output can run the unit. Generators can be rented from equipment rental companies.

Operating Through the Hot Season

When the ambient temperature climbs, the refrigeration unit works harder to hold its set point. Placing the reefer in shade or under a carport reduces compressor load and running costs through the hottest part of the year.
